Configuration on 2612 with Single Eth Interface Old Tue Nov 14, 2006 9:14:16 AM #27621 Perm Link
I found this article very helpful. So helpful that I bought a 2612 router from Network Liquidators and tried to set it up at home.
My problem is that the 2612 I have has only one Ethernet interface. Is there a way for me to still set it up as a home router (by using VLANs or something similar)?
If not, what are my options?

thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome. Yes, there is a solution.

You need to buy an ethernet WIC card. You can get them on Ebay or whatever as well.

Don't bother trying to setup VLANs with a router on a stick config.

wow...I did not expect such a fast reply....thanks.

I'll look for the WIC card. May I inquire what's wrong with using VLANs? I know it might not be a good solution but I'm broke and it will be
at least a month before I can buy another card for the 2612.

Nothing is wrong with them. It just gets difficult to really stop the traffic from flowing to each vlan without a tight config. It is more trouble than worth for a small job.

thank you Aron. I'm looking into the WIC cards.
Anything that has an ethernet would do? Such as:

That looks like a module, not a single WIC.

It should work inthe 2600 series. Just make sure by contacting the seller, first.

Cisco is running a router promo at the moment, running till April 30th:
"During the promotion, the 871 is available for US$250, and the 871W is available for US$300."
BTW: the 871W is wireless

Any teacher or student can order these by going to "the Academy Marketplace, which can be accessed through the Resource menu on the right side of the Academy Connection homepage."

Also, just to point out, you need a roll over cable (not a straight through) when connecting to the console port with a serial adapter.

Yes, that would work. Is that a one port model? You would need another module...

Something like the NM-1FE-TX.

It has a T1-DSU wic on it and of course the standard ethernet.

Anything cheaper than that? Smile

You'd have to search for a module that would work. I don't think there are WICs for ethernet or I may be wrong...

What about CISCO NM-1E2W ??

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps259/products_tech_note09186a00800ad3cc.shtml

cisco site states none of those modules would actually work?

but NM-2W is supported! Sad 200+ dollars!

and of course NM-1FE-FX works apparently those are the only two modules and no wics I can find.

So I got the NM-1E and installed it, gonna fire up the router tonight to configure, if I have service such as voip it should still work with no problem other than possibly having to config ports?

I had some issues with certain commands such as 'ip address dhcp' or 'ip dhcp excluded-address 10.0.0.1' or 'ip dhcp pool LANNET'

Could this have to do with my IOS version 11.3? I am using a 2610. I also noticed int eth0/0 works and int eth1/1 works. Thanks

I dont know if you can answer this one, but I set my ip address on the eth 0/0. I am hooked into a router right now so I can do the software upgrade. I can ping the router's address but my router cant ping anything. Any advice?

You know what, I think my whole issue lies around not having the command ip address dhcp which allows the rather to obtain the address. I could be wrong. I just am now able to ping the default gateway of the router, cant ping the computer yet woohoo!

I managed to get the router upgraded, going to set it up tonight. If I set up the router wouldnt I need a firewall of some sort like a cisco pix in front of it or netscreen?

For doing firewall related things yes, but remember you are natting the connection and that provides some protection.

I did the whole setup, the only command that did not work for me was stopping the telnet service from outside. My computers on the network get an ip address but no internet, I noticed some items in the run that should not be there. I attempted to erase the run and copy again but those items appear and I believe they are affecting my ability to resolve.

here is my run:
