Adobe under attack: New PDF, Flash zero-day

Poster: Daniel Doty
Posted on October 28, 2010 at 7:40:07 PM
According to an article published today on ZDNet, Adobe is under attack again! Here is a little of what the article states as a summary of the issue:

Quote

A critical vulnerability has been identified in Flash Player 10.1.85.3 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris; Adobe Flash Player 10.1.95.2 and earlier versions for Android; and the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader 9.4 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Acrobat 9.4 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows and Macintosh. This vulnerability (CVE-2010-3654) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

Battlefield 2142 Now With Spyware

Poster: Aron Schatz

EA has severely screwed itself over with this one. It seems that BF2142 will come with spyware that monitors your internet activity to serve ads in game. Nevermind that you have to PAY FOR THE GAME. This is total crap. I already hate VU Games and EA sucks as well.

Quote

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware shit. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).

MySpace Ads Deliver Spyware

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 20, 2006 at 2:32:08 PM
In yet another reason why you shouldn't be running IE, a MySpace ad installs spyware if your computer isn't patched. Either run Firefox, or patch your computers! Better, do both.

Quote

Internet Explorer users who visited a Web page containing this ad and whose IE was not equipped with the WMF patch would not get that warning. Rather, their machines would silently download a Trojan horse program that installs junk software in the PurityScan/ClickSpring family of adware. This stuff bombards the user with pop-up ads and tracks their Web usage. Only a little more than half of the anti-virus programs used at anti-virus testing service AV-Test.org flagged the various programs that the Trojan tried to download as malicious or suspicious.

Not News: Kazaa is Spyware

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 27, 2004 at 4:36:36 PM
I know this may shock some of you, but Kazaa is considered spyware from CA, the makers of McAfee antivirus.

Quote

CA gave Kazaa a high "clot factor," its measure of how much a program slows a machine by adding unnecessary registry entries and directories. However, classifying a popular application like Kazaa as spyware is a delicate matter, and CA admits this creates difficulties in attaching labels.
