Opera: Love it or Hate it? Old Tue Apr 10, 2007 1:18:54 AM #36510 Perm Link
I know many people don't understand Opera and hate it right away. For many, the first encounter with it, is like falling in love. That happened to me. The first time I was so fascinated by that music! I was around 8 years old, the aria was from "Carmen" and it was on Sesame Street, an orange was singing that aria, the mouth was made out of a rubber band. It was just animation, but it hooked me right away. Years later I discover Opera and since I've been in love with most of them. My favorites are La Traviata and Carmen. How about you?

Carmen is nice but all I know about it, sadly, is from the Tom and Jerry cartoons!
It's probably a step up from classical, might help me relax or be nice to see, but to listen for any other occasion I don't think I would, but only because I have so much other music in my collection to keep up with.
I wouldn't knock it! haha

The ring saga. It's the only epic story about magic rings you'll ever need.

Hi The Sam! Well, then maybe you'll find one day what it is to be in love! In the mean time, try Opera as a different kind of music. But when you are in love, it helps to understand Opera too.

Apparently you need to listen to The Cure, my dear!

Quote

I don't care if monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and wednesday too
Thursday i don't care about you
It's friday i'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's friday i'm in love

Saturday wait
And sunday always comes too late
But friday never hesitate...

I don't care if monday's black
Tuesday wednesday heart attack
Thursday never looking back
It's friday i'm in love

Monday you can hold your head
Tuesday wednesday stay in bed
Or thursday watch the walls instead
It's friday i'm in love

Saturday wait
And sunday always comes too late
But friday never hesitate...

Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a shriek
Spinning round and round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's friday
I'm in love

It's just one of those things on my brain because it was REALLY a popular single when I was young. Kinda like the Safety Dance, Thriller, etc.

But really you weren't meant to guess what I meant, it was intended as a two part joke where I make an odd reference, you say you have no idea what I'm on about, then I post lyrics or something.

Well, that is only to demonstrate that our brain is filled with useless information that at some point it just comes up when the "keyword" just gets googled inside you!

I don't like to listen to oera, because it drives me crazy when I can't understand the words, but I do like to go to operas, because then you can see on stage what's supposed to be happening.

If you listen with the "libretto", usually there is a translation next to the words. That's how I learn the little Italian I know, following the Opera while listening. And in many theaters now, they have "Overtitles" where you see the translation of what they are singing. In New York, at the Met, every chair has a little screen in the back where you see the translation too.
