I have been using Openoffice for sometime now, I think OpenOffice deserves a detailed discussion. I have been using it since it's version 1.1. There has been a lot of improvement since version 1.1. The present version is 2.1 which is a very good office suite.

Open Office works pretty well, it can handle pretty much anything that the comparable proprietary program can. I like the export to PDF function which on Microsoft can only be used in conjunction with another program.

I don't have that problem with MSO, if you go into your tools which most people don't know about it has a self contained pdf converter. It's not an add on it is part of the program. Now I have other problems with MSO and for what I do OO hasn't cleaned up some of it's deficientcies.

Huh. I guess that shows you how often I actually do any serious work on Windows and MSO. I prefer OpenOffice and use it almost exclusively but I'm a big proponent of Linux in most regards anyway.

OO is a great alternative but it can't compare to MSO. Although the difference between the two is hard to justify spending the money.

This is very true. Over a short period of time OpenOffice has come quite a long way. There are still things to be done and features need to be implemented but as of now for basic users it works quite well.
