»Is Windows More Expensive?

I love how articles discount the fact that Microsoft makes many different version of Windows to confuse the costumer. When people are given the choice of this many operating systems (of the same kind!), they will make a mistake and purchase double. A great tactic for money, but people should be outraged that there are more than ONE version of the basic operating system.

The people who think about the price of Windows are those who actually go to a retail store and buy an upgrade copy, Cherry said. So far, sales of boxed copies of Vista have trailed initial sales of Windows XP, according to NPD data. Cherry anticipates that most people will buy a flavor of Vista that corresponds to the version they have of XP. But some will want to move up to a heftier-featured edition, and that will add further to the perceived cost. That's particularly true if a consumer opts for Vista Ultimate, which sells for $259 as an upgrade and $399 for the full product.

Anyone considering getting windows vista should run the upgrade advisor from MS's site. Then count how many programs/devices won't work. Many users will need to take their shoes off for this.

And sit back and fix dinner and get a drink and wait while the list compiles! I am staunchly against Vista and I will not be dissauded from my stance!

Same for me. Why should I go for a system which sets so many preconditions for me to be loaded. The job of an OS is to help other software run, if it itself takes so much of system resources then we should reconsider using Vista.

There was an article on [H]ardocp the other day about managing to run XP on ancient [H]ardware. The cpu usage on a pentium system with 64megs of ram was the same for xp as the cpu usage on a A64 3200+ with 1 gig of ram for vista. (30% btw)

Vista might be stressing more on the entertainment part of an OS than other OS's. Due to the demand of gaming software Vista has given more importance to Graphices.
