What the hell is wrong with the government? <a href="http://news.com.com/2100-1011_3-6159840.html">Why change DST periods that really don't need to be</a>. Either make everything on standard time or daylight savings time all year round. People can handle the change in light conditions... we don't need the government to baby us.

Yes, this lovely idea sent our IT department into a tizzy and made my life He!! for a few days. It's senseless, pointless and just down right stupid. Kind of like Y2K.

It's slightly humorous that our computers of today can handle intense video editing, 1 gigabit network connections, etc, but cannot begin to understand daylight-saving!

The difference in daylight length in Hawaii is only an hour or 2 year round (you don't have much of a tide, either)
up here in the north dec.21 it's only 8 hours from "offical" sunrise to sunset (and pretty dim for the first and last hour) while on june 21st we get 16 hours plus several hours of twilight.
DST does save a huge amount of energy, while allowing business and government to maintain the same apparent schedule (ie school starts at 7am, banks open at 9am, etc.) If each business, government office, school or person had to individually decide when to change their schedule, to make best use of the daylight, the confusion would be a 1000 times worse then it is.
having some relatives who live on maui, have HI not on DST causes some confusion when we make phone calls, the time zone difference is 2 hours in winter and 3 hours in summer.
Arizona also does not use DST and the western half of Illinois which is really wierd, some places driving a few miles east puts you in a different time zone where it is either an hour earlier or later depending on the time of year.
other countries also use different dates to start and stop DST.
The problem isn't Daylight savings time, it's that DST is not standardized/universal.

if DST was in sync over the world before, that's fucked up now, I'd probably know if that change had been made here.
