Student Discounts Old Fri Feb 2, 2007 10:24:07 AM #33379 Perm Link
I am trying to find a FULL (not upgrade) version of Windows XP Media Center Edition, that I can get through a student discount. I am willing to go for XP Home or Pro, but MCE would be best.

Does anyone know where I can get this stuff on the cheap?

Thanks,
Dex

Do you really want to pay for it?

I still haven't seen good student discounts.

Of course I don't want to pay for it, but I don't want an illegal copy either. I wouldn't mind an illegal copy if I could not get caught, and still get all the microsoft updates, so thats why I want to buy it.

If you have a way to get it otherwise with all the benefits of buying it, please let me know.

Yeah, I had Linux. I hated it. I am a hardcore gamer, and for me, linux just doesnt cut it.

Linux cuts it... it is the other companies that either make the games or the drivers that don't cut it.

He's got a point. WINE, works for the motivated. You have to tweak it a little bit each time to get anything new to work.

Hardcore Gamer... how could you try linux and hate it? Did you hate its features or just the fact that you couldn't play your favorite games? I would suggest a dual boot machine of ubuntu for everyday tasks, and an **acquired** version of XP that you use exclusively for gaming. That way you significantly lower your odds for falling victim to M$'s mistakes and money traps. I think their are cracked SP2 also.

If you take my advice, you get two pluses. Gaming that you enjoy, and you learn a new OS that will save you thousands over the course of your lifetime.

Actually, thats what I did.

Let me restate.

I tried Ubuntu (the only linux I HAVE tried), and hated it. The main reason is that it was so overly simplified, it confused me, and also that I couldn't get my wifi to work.

Ideally, I would want a HD with windows on it, and then a hard drive with Linux, as well as all my media and documents on that.

Maybe someone could help point me to a Linux Distro that would be good for my needs?

"Power User Friendly, WIFI support, mild game support (I know that Epic and ID games support linux), and do it yourself installation.

Thanks,
Dex

The main reason is that it was so overly simplified,

That's ubuntu for ye. Have a go at, i dunno, Debian or Frugalware - or maybe Fedora ?

Said By dexaroni

it confused me,

more like disturbed maybe ? (to be honest, I don't like ubuntu too much for myself either, but the clue is that is has a high chance of just working)

Said By dexaroni

and also that I couldn't get my wifi to work.

google is your friend, m'boy. Google and support forums are the way GNU/Linux work - and it's way better documented than MS crap.

I, for myself, use Debian. Debian is the base of ubuntu, but does not fixate on one specific user group. It trumps with a massive software collection, When you install Debian, you can either configure to be dropped to a shell, or to install both the KDE and Gnome desktop environments with a fair bunch of software.

Frugalware is an example for a similar distro, but it has a smaller user base and package collection, but a lot more recent software (which means that the development branch "current" is broken most of the time.

For software support and simplicity, chose a i386 (x86) version, for coolness and speed, chose amd64. I personally use amd64 debian, and it's brilliant - even includes wine.

Well, I got everything set up the way I wanted it, and it looks like I am going to be using the newest version of Ubuntu, to start off, as it just is the most Noob friendly, then I will eventually jump to Debian.

I got wifi working sorta, I had to use the i386 version, as the AMD64 of 6.06 Ubuntu seems to have a wifi glitch where it freezes when you connect.

WINE is fucking terrible i used it to play wow a while back it RAPES your framerate. I'd go with windows just for gaming but i prefer linux/mac for everything else.

WoW runs fine on the Mac considering Blizzard is made up of Mac fans.
